OUR HISTORY

In the fall of 1999, three congregations - Beth Israel, Bnay Abraham and Rosh Pina - embarked on a journey to create a strong, viable, single congregation in Winnipeg's north end. On August 8, 2002, as a result of the "Congregation Etz Chayim Act" being given royal assent in the Manitoba Legislative Assembly, Congregation Etz Chayim was born.

Beth Israel

Beth Israel's beginnings in the early 1900's included its own union of the Hebrew Sick Benefit Association (which provided loans and paid for health care for new immigrant members) and the Teferet Israel Synagogue. Many years later, in 1976, the Beth Israel Synagogue opened its doors on Sinclair and Kingsbury. Initially, it was an Orthodox synagogue. Over time, it evolved into a conservative, egalitarian shul.

Bnay Abraham

The Bnay Abraham had its beginnings in the early 1900's as the Bnay Abraham Sick Benefit Society, which was created to help new immigrants. As years passed, a number of small north end shuls joined together culminating in 1955, when land was donated on Enniskillen and Aikins to build the Bnay Abraham Synagogue. It began as an orthodox synagogue and, over time, it became more "traditional" rather than Orthodox, with mixed seating and the use microphones on Shabbat.

Rosh Pina

The old Rosh Pina Synagogue on Martha and Henry was established in 1893, and was considered a Sephardic congregation until 1948. The new Rosh Pina was dedicated on Sunday, June 15, 1952 at a site on Matheson Avenue east of Main Street that belonged to the Jewish Children's Orphanage and Aid Society. As time went by, Rosh Pina became a modern, traditional synagogue. Prior to the amalgamation in 2002, its approach was conservative egalitarian.

We are now experiencing the energy of three synagogues, each with a rich and exciting history, united as one. Congregation Etz Chayim, a beautiful garment woven from the threads of three equally beautiful fabrics, offers a future to us, our children, and to the children of generations to come. L'Dor Va'Dor!
