Program Description

1. Five Characters.

What are the factors that will promote the Jewish people’s continuation? What will lead to its dissolution? The focal point of this discussion are five fictional characters who bear a blend of traits that have both negative and positive consequences Jewishly. These characters serve as straw men for people to consider the ramifications of their actions on the future of the Jewish people.

2. The Ethics of Truth Telling: When Can One Lie?

An analysis of Jewish sources that show the tension between the formally “Structured Ethics” that emphasizes telling the truth, and the “Situational Ethics” that sometimes prescribe telling falsehoods.

3. Communication in relationships and beyond.

Why is communication so difficult sometimes in relationships?  Why do we sometimes think someone wants something totally opposite from what they actually want? Does the opposite sex really play games or do we just not understand them. This workshop helps each gender community understand the language and the values of the other.  Do your co-workers, family, and friends understand you? Well it may be simpler than you think

4. Extremism and Fanaticism.

Why do people take extremist views? Why do people become fanatical about certain causes?  Is there a process or are they born that way?  We will look at the transformation of a few well known fanatics and extremists, and in their own words see what they believed caused their transformations.

5. Jewish Futures Game.

A board game where participants look at different possible situations, and decide what effects it might have on their future, and the future of the Jewish people.

6. Lifeboat Ethics.

Your lifeboat is sinking, who do you throw out? This includes a discussion of actual triage situations and an examination of the varied opinions in traditional and non‑traditional sources.
